Living Intentionally and Setting Goals

When it comes to building a healthy lifestyle, both physically and spiritually, one of the most important things you can do is live with intention. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get swept up in the rush of daily life, constantly reacting to what comes next without taking the time to reflect on where you’re headed. I’ve learned firsthand that setting meaningful goals and living intentionally can transform not just how we live, but how we feel.
At Nation of Strength (NoS), we encourage people to align their health and fitness goals with their values and faith, knowing that every aspect of our lives is connected. Whether you’re focused on building strength in the gym or deepening your relationship with God, here are a few key ways to live with more purpose and set goals that lead to real change:
1. Set specific, attainable goals
One of the most common mistakes people make when setting goals is being too vague. Whether you’re training to hit a new fitness milestone or wanting to improve your spiritual life, it’s important to be as specific as possible. Rather than simply saying, “I want to get stronger” or “I want to read the Bible more,” define what success looks like. How much stronger? How often will you read scripture? Break down big goals into smaller, measurable steps that you can track.
For example, if you want to increase your squat by 50 pounds, start by setting incremental goals. Maybe add 5 pounds every couple of weeks. If your goal is to read more of the Bible, commit to a reading plan, and focus on one book or chapter at a time. This way, you can celebrate small victories along the way, which keeps you motivated and gives you a sense of accomplishment.
2. Be consistent
Intentional living requires consistency. It’s one thing to set goals, but the real work comes in sticking with them over time. It’s easy to be enthusiastic at the start, but progress is made in the small, daily efforts. Showing up consistently, even when you don’t feel like it, builds habits, and habits shape who you become.
In my own fitness journey, I’ve found that the days I’m least motivated are the most important. Those are the days that strengthen not just my body but my discipline and commitment. The same goes for spiritual growth. We’re called to walk daily with God, not just in moments of need or celebration.
3. Find accountability
When we try to do it alone, it’s easier to lose momentum. That’s why accountability is so crucial. Whether it’s a workout partner, a mentor, or a supportive community, having people around you who encourage you and challenge you to stay on track can make all the difference.
At NoS, we aim to provide that kind of uplifting community—whether you’re following one of our strength programs or joining us for a faith-based event. Surround yourself with people who share your values, and together, you’ll build each other up.
4. Seek balance
A healthy lifestyle is about more than achieving a particular fitness goal or even a personal milestone in your faith. It’s about finding balance. It’s easy to over-prioritize one area of your life while neglecting others, but true health comes from a holistic approach.
Yes, push yourself in the gym, but also make space for rest and recovery. Yes, dig deeper into your spiritual life, but don’t forget to nurture your relationships with friends and family. Taking care of your body, mind, and spirit together leads to lasting well-being. When I’m intentional about this balance in my own life, I feel more grounded and capable of handling whatever challenges come my way.
5. Remember your “why”
In the day-to-day grind, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Whether you’re chasing a personal best in the gym or striving for spiritual growth, there will be setbacks. When those moments of doubt or frustration arise, take a step back and reflect on your “why.” Why did you set this goal in the first place? What are you ultimately striving for?
For me, I’m driven by the belief that God has a greater plan for our lives. One that goes beyond the physical and touches every aspect of who we are. In Proverbs 16:3, we’re reminded: “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established” (ESV). This scripture keeps me grounded and helps me remember that my efforts, when aligned with God’s will, are never in vain.
Living intentionally is about more than achieving a specific goal. It’s about how we approach life itself. At NoS, we encourage you to view your health journey as a lifelong pursuit of balance, purpose, and growth. It’s about building habits that align with your values and trusting that, with consistency and faith, your plans will flourish in ways you never imagined.
I invite you to join us in this pursuit. Whether you’re lifting weights or lifting your prayers, remember that each step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to the person God created you to be.
Blessings to you on your health and fitness journey,
Erin
